ROOM TO
BREATHE
PROJECT
We are in the midst of a youth mental health crisis.
We can improve mental health by developing the social and emotional well-being (SEWB) of children in schools AND the adults who support them.
We do this by partnering with organizations and innovation projects that provide SEWB knowledge and practices to children and adults.
We support them in their effort to best serve their existing communities and in their growth to reach more communities.
THE MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEM
Mental illness- especially as seen in depression and suicide rates- is hitting our youth hard. There are serious physical, academic, and economic repercussions for all.
VISION
-
What do we mean by “room to breathe”?Unrestricted Funding Strategic support Connection to best practices and networks
-
What do we mean by "knowledge"?"Research around mental health needs and treatment/prevention or promotion strategies Skills in how to identify mental health needs in yourself or someone else Skills in sharing knowledge about mental health so as to reduce the stigma around it
-
What do we mean by "practices"?"Habits (i.e., a daily gratitude practice) Skills (i.e., how to manage one’s emotions) Mindsets (i.e., reorienting toward the positive)
-
What do we mean by grow their SEWB?Again...because SEWB lives on a spectrum...mitigating the bad AND growing the good [[ insert SEWB image ]]
R2B’s vision for the world is that all members in school communities will grow their social and emotional well-being (SEWB), in order to improve the mental health of our youth.
MISSION
Our mission is to give organizations and innovation projects “room to breathe” so that they can equip ALL members within a school community with the knowledge and practices to grow their social and emotional well-being (SEWB).

GUIDING PRINCIPLES
ALL
ARE ABLE
Regardless of one's mental health starting point, both children and adults are able to grow in their SEWB.
MIND-BODY CONNECTION
Mental health, physical health, and academic health are inextricably linked.
DETECT
EARLY
Undetected mental health issues can become more acute later in life. We must detect issues, prevent illness, and promote wellness from an early age.
ADULTS
FIRST
Adults must learn and internalize the practices that grow their SEWB first, before teaching and modeling it to children.
CAUSE AND
EFFECT
Learning and behavior issues (often detected at school) can be symptoms of an underlying social/emotional/mental health issue.
ONE SIZE DOESN’T
FIT ALL
In order for a practice to work, the teacher needs to embody it. Not every practice is going to fit every teacher and/or student.

In the spring of 2019, R2B set out to answer this guiding question: How might we use our resources to create the biggest impact on the social and emotional well-being of our youth?
In order to start answering this question, R2B conducted qualitative research with leaders and organizations in the fields of social and emotional education and mental health by interviewing 13 organizations over a period of 3 months.
